Dear colleagues,

South African Tourism's Insights & Analytics team has just released a new USA Market Segmentation Study that explores the evolving preferences, motivations, and booking behaviors of American travelers.

The United States remains one of South Africa’s most valuable overseas source markets, recognized for its high visitor volumes, strong spending power, and longer lengths of stay.  However, American travelers are evolving, and so are their expectations.

One message emerges clearly from the research: today’s American traveler is looking for more than just safari.

The study identified three emerging traveler segments:

  • Cultural Connoisseurs – travelers seeking cultural immersion, scenic beauty, local cuisine, heritage, and authentic storytelling experiences.
  • Experiential Trailblazers – affluent travelers motivated by adventure, discovery, cultural engagement, and meaningful local experiences.
  • Modern Memory Makers – travelers seeking family-friendly, shared experiences that combine fun, culture, convenience, and discovery.

Key findings from the research include:

  • American travelers are willing to spend significantly on travel.
  • They are looking for diverse itineraries that combine multiple experiences.
  •  Authenticity and storytelling are increasingly important.
  • Ease of planning and trusted information sources influence conversion.
  • Reviews and digital presence directly affect purchasing decisions.
  • Different traveler segments require different messaging and product strategies.

The findings also highlight the growing role of digital discovery, reviews, AI-enabled tools, and personalized trip planning in shaping travel decisions.

For those of you packaging and selling South Africa, the opportunity is clear, American travelers continue to view South Africa as a desirable long-haul destination, but they are increasingly seeking richer, more diverse experiences that go beyond traditional wildlife offerings.
