Borgo Pignano's Commitment
to Sustainable Tourism

Dear *|FIRSTNAME|*,

Located in Tuscany, right outside of the picturesque hilltop town of Volterra and very near San Gimignano and Siena, Borgo Pignano's steadfast commitment to sustainability allows it to run as a completely authentic, Tuscan haven. As you sit on the 750 acres of organic farmland and take in the stunning views, the team at Borgo Pignano is engaging in eco-friendly practices that benefit both the environment and the guest experience. It is because of these sustainable practices that the bees at Borgo Pignano continue to happily buzz through the gardens, wheat fields sway in the breeze (from which the borgo makes its own pasta), and crops yield impressive, delicious produce. Borgo Pignano strives to work in harmony with its environment, preserving the traditions of this magical land and bringing a positive impact to the local community. Read more about this environmental commitment below and find out why we are so proud to bring you this very special “slice of heaven.”

All my best,

Q&A WITH CEO LUCIANO LUSARDI:
SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES AT BORGO PIGNANO

Q: Can you tell us about some of your environmentally focused practices?
A: Sustainability is at the center of everything we do here at Borgo Pignano. The Villa, maisonettes and cottages have all been restored and decorated using environmentally friendly products such as locally sourced stone, reclaimed slate, organic plasters and eco-paints. Water is only served in reusable glass containers, and we only use cleaning products that are eco-friendly. In an effort to conserve energy, our heating and hot water systems are fueled by solar panels and wood chip-fired boilers, which are fed by timber harvested from the estate’s own forests. As for water conservation, we are actively improving the soil conditions and decreasing the need for irrigation. In fact we have successfully experimented with swales - a natural system for retaining rainwater and preventing soil erosion – which has never been done before in Tuscany.

Q: Describe the impact of the growing methods used at Borgo Pignano.
A
: Natural and sustainable agricultural growing methods improve the structure of the soil and increase the fertility of the farm, orchards, olive groves, vegetable gardens and vineyard. This type of ‘no harm’ farming and plant production has been popular for many generations in Tuscany and promotes a self-supporting eco-system. We prefer to grow heritage varieties of vegetables and fruits native to Tuscany, which means that guests can enjoy freshly harvested ingredients daily.

Q: In what ways are you able to support your local community?
A: We are proud to say that 80% of our staff is locally hired from within a 30 mile radius of the hotel. Beyond giving our employees proper training and introducing them to the ethos of Borgo Pignano, we ensure that we give them the support necessary to grow both professionally and individually during their time with us. Also, all products that we don't currently cultivate or produce in-house are resourced locally, providing a positive impact on the local economy and community. In addition, our Pignano Art Gallery gives talented Tuscan artists a place to exhibit their work while giving guests an on-property cultural experience.

Q: How does Borgo Pignano embrace its natural and cultural heritage?
A: Borgo Pignano reflects the rural and unique Tuscan way of life. We strive to welcome our guests with art, music, gastronomy and activities that tell an authentic story about the cultural identity of our region and its people. Everything we do, from making design choices to crafting tailor-made experiences, is an ode to the beauty of Tuscany; we remain infinitely inspired by the traditions of this land.

WHAT ADVISORS ARE SAYING

"Thank you for a fabulous stay at Borgo Pignano. I really loved everything about the property (staff, food, design, location), I was so impressed. Luciano [CEO of Borgo Pignano] really takes care of his guests and has done something very special with this property. I was very spoiled at Borgo Pignano and I know my clients have felt the same way. Last year I had a family there ... they had an exceptional experience and kept talking about it – home run!" — Travel Advisor at Zebrano Travel

The accommodations at Borgo Pignano were fantastic, especially guest services. We really felt staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable and that we had everything we needed. For example, the manager had a late night snack ready for us upon our arrival even though the kitchen had long since closed. He also drove to the neighboring town to buy us baby dish soap and a bottle brush when we couldn't locate one during our outings.” — Clients of Ciao Bambino

"I have to tell you that Borgo Pignano is about the most beautiful place I've ever stayed, both in terms of the setting but also the hotel itself! It was really spectacular. [My room] was upgraded which was amazing. And the staff was incredibly gracious, very genuine and warm and eager to help, which really makes it special. The food was excellent.  I really can't tell you enough how lovely it was." — Clients of Elli Travel
