Peru Culture Bulletin

Callao was once the seaport in all of South America. For centuries all goods transported to Spain and Europe were required to travel through its docks. Don’t miss out on two spots in this historical neighborhood.

Monumental Callao

Monumental Callao is located in the district of Callao and has become in recent years a touristic place full of art, music and color, visited by many tourists and locals. Stretching along Jiron Constitucion next to the beautiful Catedral de San José del Callao, Monumental Callao has been a transformational project from one of the hottest neighborhoods in one of the most important references for art and social transformation in Peru.

Tour the emblematic heritage area of the port and its historical streets between El Real Felipe, Plaza Grau, Plaza Matriz, Plaza Gálvez, and The old Ronald building through art, music, gastronomy, history, graffiti, and living culture.

Real Felipe fortress

The Real Felipe Fortress was built in the 18th century to defend the port of Callao from pirates. With most of Peru’s mineral exports and luxury imports for the Lima elite coming and going from the port, Callao was a natural target.

The fortress has been converted into a military and history museum. Inside are exhibits featuring 19th-century cannons, tanks from World War II and exhibits showcasing Peru’s military uniforms and weaponry over the ages, a house telling the story of a fallen hero from the War of the Pacific against Chile and, of course, pirates.
