Women Shaping Travel in Guyana

Dear Heather,

Tourism in Guyana is growing and evolving. Women are leading this transformation. They guide visitors through cultural and natural experiences, manage lodges, and lead conservation initiatives. Their expertise and leadership are shaping how people experience the country.

Guides and Cultural Ambassadors

Women guides connect travellers to Guyana’s heritage and landscapes. Cherry-Ann Greene of Ride Along GY is championing wellness tourism in Georgetown through guided bicycle tours. Her tours encourage active travel, connect visitors with the city’s landmarks, and promote healthy lifestyles. Initiatives like hers expand the range of tourism offerings in Guyana while showcasing local leadership and innovation.

Entrepreneurs and Lodge Managers

Women manage lodges and eco-resorts across the country. Shebana Daniels of Waia Ecolodge offers visitors an authentic eco-tourism experience and supports community development.

Conservation Leaders

Women conservationists lead efforts to protect wildlife and ecosystems. Annette Arjoon has spent years working to safeguard rivers, forests, and wildlife. She founded the Guyana Marine Conservation Society (GMCS) in 2000 to protect sea turtles and their habitats along the Shell Beach coastline. She expanded the organisation’s focus to include mangrove restoration and coastal defence projects, emphasising the long‑term health of coastal ecosystems and biodiversity.

Shaping the Future

These women mentor the next generation and inspire young women to pursue careers in tourism, conservation, and hospitality. Candace Phillips [below right], Senior Manager of Product Development, and Annarie Seecharan, Senior Manager of Destination Marketing at the Guyana Tourism Authority, are helping shape how Guyana is presented to visitors locally and internationally. Overseeing these efforts is Hon. Susan Rodrigues [below left], Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce. Although she has served for only six months, she has quickly driven initiatives to strengthen the sector and support the work of women leaders across tourism. Their collective efforts position Guyana as a destination that values expertise, innovation, and leadership.
